Panneau sur la Via Allier

The Via Allier is an exceptional cycle route that winds 455 km along the river Allier, from its confluence with the Loire near Nevers in the Nièvre to its source in Langogne in the Lozère. It crosses five departments- the Nièvre, the Allier, the Puy-de-Dôme, the Haute-Loire and the Lozère - and reveals varied landscapes, including the spectacular Gorges de l'Allier, offering a total immersion in the wild beauty of the Auvergne.

This route will be extended to the Mediterranean at Palavas-les-Flots in the coming years.

To complete the entire route, it takes between 8 and 14 days with the family, and 5 to 7 days for seasoned cyclists.

The section from Brioude to Langogne is one of the wildest and most striking parts of the Via Allier, plunging cyclists into mid-mountain landscapes, deep gorges, and hilltop villages. Forgotten castles and Romanesque churches will surprise and amaze you along the way.

This stretch of the Via Allier is also known as the Cycle Route of the Gorges of the Allier.

How about combining cycling and canoeing in the Allier Gorges?

Starting from Lavoûte-Chilhac, labelled "Most beautiful villages in France", follow the river to Chilhac, a small medieval village classified “Petite Cité de Caractère.” Perched on basalt columns, the village overlooks the river in an exceptional natural setting. It’s a great spot for fishing, swimming, birdwatching, and seasonal mushroom picking. The shaded beach near the public campsite is perfect for a relaxing break.

As you head upstream along the Allier, discover the Ferme du Blot, which offers delicious local products, before continuing to Langeac — then canoe back down to Lavoûte-Chilhac.
